NATURALLY ME...

Curly, coily, and kinky are just a few words to describe the natural state of an African American woman’s hair. As a child I had no clue that my hair fell into one of those categories.

My description of a black woman’s hair then was simple; it was either good or bad. If your hair was thin it was put into the good category. While the little girls who screamed for freedom as their mothers struggled to put their hair in a simple pony-tail had bad hair. Fortunately for them what is now described as the creamy crack better known as perm, was lathered into their heads so that they too can boast about their good hair.

I rarely got a perm, but when I did I was flooded with comments like “Girl you must have got a perm, your hair is too good.” “Do you have Indian in your family?” “That’s all your hair?” Looking back I laugh at some of those questions, but I should get ready because I know more are on the way. Just last year I decided to enter my hair into rehab and break its habit of that darn creamy crack.

That decision came after I discovered a natural hair community on YouTube. Their big and beautiful curly hair inspired me take the steps needed to become natural. Of course when I made the announcement, those dreaded comments came. “Girl your hair is gonna be so nappy!” “You might be fine; I heard you had good hair when you were little.” “Men don’t like women with natural hair.” Again, I laughed because in the end I know I’m doing this for me.

I've had the permed straight hair all of my life, i need something new! In my opinion i think every black woman should go natural at least once in their life. It's a emotion filled journey but in the end it's also truly amazing. I'll admit I have had close calls, where i ached for a perm, but i fought through it.

June will be the month I cut off my permed ends, making me 100% natural. I'm scared to cut my hair but in the end, it will grow back. I’ve already decided that before someone fixes their lips to say a word, I’m going to politely shush them swing my big, curly, coily, and kinky natural hair and walk away.

* The last two girls are youtubers who really inspired me to take this journey, they too have blogs check them out!
